Pendleton Helps Shorewood Win
“Bicycle Friendly Community” Award
By Alexander “Sandie” Pendleton
At Pendleton Legal, S.C., we work hard for our clients, but we are also dedicated to the communities in which we live. Sandie Pendleton recently helped his community (Shorewood, Wisconsin) win the League of American Bicyclist’s Bicycle Friendly Community award. The “BFC” award recognizes and encourages those cities, towns and villages that have made a substantial commitment to providing safe accommodation for cycling, and which encourage bicycling for transportation, recreation, physical activity and economic development. Communities applying for the award are required to do a detailed assessment of their bicycling conditions, accommodations and policies. Pendleton is the co-leader of a local cycling group, and was the person who first suggested Shorewood should apply for the award.
Almost 500 communities have applied for the BFC designation, and currently there are only 190 BFCs recognized by the League. Shorewood is the first and only village in Wisconsin to have received the award, and is one of only a few “small BFCs” nationwide (i.e., BFCs with populations of less than 15,000).
